FORBIDDEN SHADOWS

"With the recent advances in technology, all of the food consumed by the modern society has come to consist only of hunger suppressant. [...] This senseless pursuit of any economy of time and costs in labor or material tends to prevail in its pure abstract logic of the commodity, which, over time, ignoring the claims of quality." Guy Debord, Abat-faim, 1985

In the constant continuation of the technology, some researchers explore the lead of the GMO’s impact, and how they could be used on humans, in the interest of being convenient, accessible, within reach.  After years of researches, through the combination of ideas between chemists and biologists, using an amount of energy, a new “currency” was on the market; a syringe, generating a mutation in the human body, “customizes” the body by growing the food on itself, and giving to the humankind a new sort of appearance and behavior.

Inspired by the Harmonia axyridis (or the Asian lady beetle), three different types of mutations are possible: the bones, creating a new exoskeleton, the fat, keeping the idea of the cannibalism, is where the food is growing, and the skin, a new membrane of protection. These vital needs, acting like a new device for the human, give the possibility to become a nomad, feeling free in the city, and erring from one place to another one, with only the anxiety of finding a new syringe.

This entire wave creates a fall on the food industry, facing this new only way of food administration through the syringe, the energy and pharmaceutical sector is in a total expansion, but demanding a highly resource in energy. Some new power stations are built near the laboratories, but providing energy only with the raw materials.  People will start to sell their environment (retails, apartments), permitting to extract the raw materials and have money to buy new syringe.  We enter in a partial destruction of the built environment, according to a total consumption society. The nomads will discover new ways of living, like a parasite, thanks to their second skin, a new camouflage in the city, in the porous spaces. It creates a new mapping into the city of different flows, the one looking for new raw materials and staying in a total control and the one, going through the idea of the psycho-geography, trying to discover new environments, but still hold by the need of the syringe.

Forbidden shadows is regarded a beautiful dissection of the relationship between humans and their environment as a sort of negative utopia, a science dystopia between man and technology and a social dystopia between man and man, going through new protocols and experiments, new appearances and grows, new emergences and coexistences.
